DOING THE HARD GRAFT
Located 3hrs from the Gold Coast, right in the middle of Grafton City on the NSW North Coast, Grafton Speedway is a picturesque showground venue which has been a mainstay for Northern NSW and Southern QLD competitors for several decades.
Government regulation may have put a dampener on their proposed season calendar, with COVID-19 border restrictions preventing interstate competitors from attending their early season events, however the venue is pressing on undettered, instead turning their focus to growing the local competitor base through some innovative ideas.
Grafton’s October 3 event will feature the innagrual ‘Derby Teams Champs’ event, with the track hosting 4-on-4 teams racing, utilising Derby cars. Track operators Mick and Cindy Corbett anticipate the concept will bring new blood to the sport, with huge interest expressed by local and travelling ‘teams’, all excited by the prospect of using Derby racing as an introduction to Speedway – hopefully seeing them transition into other forms of Speedway over time.
Despite COVID-19 restrictions, Grafton Speedway head into the 2020/21 season with renewed enthusiasm thanks to major capital works at the venue which will see a new, wider racing surface and a power and lighting upgrade to bring new life to the historic 113 year-old showground facility.
Since acquiring the venue in 2018, Mick and Cindy’s focus has been to restablish Grafton as a competitors favourite, with emphasis on consolodating classes to ensure strong field sizes and plenty of track time. They’ve set about widening the 440m clay track from 11m to 15m wide, with more banking and new clay. Coupled with three new lighting towers and a significant power upgrade, competitors can look forward to more opportunities for side-by-side action.

We wish Grafton Speedway all the best ahead of their much anticipated 2020/21 season!
