IMPORTANT STEP FORWARD FOR NEW SYDNEY SPEEDWAY
Today the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the new Sydney International Speedway at Eastern Creek was submitted to the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, marking an important step in the project’s progress. Subject to planning approvals, construction of the speedway is planned to start later this year and is expected to be completed by the start of the speedway racing season in 2021/22.
The proposed venue comprises a 460m clay track with a 345m motorcycle speedway circuit on the infield. The outer track replicates the existing size and shape at Parramatta (incorporating the latest safety features), while the latter is built to international specifications and is capable of hosting everything from Speedway GP down to grassroots motorcycle speedway, karting and vintage classes.
A virtual information room displaying key aspects of the project, the EIS documents, video featuring information from industry specialists and a full 360 degree view of the proposed speedway is now available to view at sydneymetro.info/speedwayvirtual
Submissions on the EIS can be made directly to the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment by Wednesday 16 September 2020.
Speedway Australia Chairman Guy Thompson was enthusiastic. “We get to see the proposed plans at the same time as everyone else but are confident that this will be a world class facility. We appreciate the fact that Sydney Metro have liaised with us to ensure the venue is built to Speedway Australia’s five star safety rating.”
“In terms of the final design this is a massive opportunity that the New South Wales government has given us as a sport and we should utilise the fact that they are fast tracking the planning process to help make the venue as good as it can be. It’s important that anyone with constructive feedback gets in touch with the government via the appropriate channels by the September 16 deadline”.
Sprintcar Control Council of Australia President Kathy Kelly was also buoyant. “While it’s sad to lose the history and atmosphere of the current venue, it’s great that Sprintcar racing in New South Wales will soon have a modern new home.
“Sydney set the standard for Sprintcar racing in Australia when the current venue was built, and will do so again at Eastern Creek from next year. This is an exciting new era for our sport!”
Motorcycling NSW Ltd also said "we are enthusiastic to see the proposed plans and are certain this will be a world class facility that can be utilised by our clubs and members in the future. It is promising to see the investment the NSW Government plans to make over the next few years to ensure Motorsports continue to grow within the urban environment".
